"And what might that have been?" she asked wishing now that she'd read
the reports on her desk and didn't have to ask him.
Cortez noticed Rangi peek back at her desk and the stack of PADD's on
it. "You wont find what I'm about to say in your reports", he said
taking another bite, purposely building the tension.
Her eyes moved back to him and she frowned, watching him chewing her
tuna sweetcorn and mayonnaise sandwich. She wondered if he really knew
something or if it was just winding her up as he liked to do from time
to time.
"The base was empty", Cortez continued. "Deserted it seems, not even
any corpses", he paused for a moment, "What really worries me though,
is why someone would detonate a plasma grenade just outside the main
medical building". He sighed and took another bite of Rangi's
sandwich, looking at her the entire time.
She gave him a suspicious stare then suddenly said "Computer...end news report."
The news reader was cut off in mid word and disappeared from the screen.
" Plasma grenade?" she said then added "...I thought there was a
dampening field...how do you know about plasma grenades?"
"I already told you, an ODA team was sent to investigate", he paused
and smiled, "I'm guessing the Admiral didn't inform of you that, or
maybe he didn't even know", he added smugly, "I trained at Quantico
with the teams CO and even he was worried", he said finishing the
sandwich, placing the last piece into his mouth.
She made to ask a question, then paused, pressing her lips together
and turning her head slightly sideways as she looked at him
thoughtfully. The report would definitely be on her desk, possibly
twice, for Shane was updating her as well as her receiving any news
concerned with the missing med team via ops. She knew he was enjoying
the moment of telling her something she didn't know probably more than
he was enjoying her lunch.
" Right." she said trying to sound matter of fact. "Tell me then..."
she added as he glanced at the tray eying her glass. " What criteria
are there for detonating plasma grenades?" She reached out and lifted
her glass, taking a sip from it.
Richard chuckled. "Its not so much criteria or guidelines, but more
of why someone would feel the need to use such a deadly weapon in a
place where as far as we know, there was no need", he said leaning
back into the sofa. "Or do we", he added raising an eyebrow in
Spock-like fashion.
The glass was replaced. " We might." she said raising her eyes to
meet his. A moment passed. "...but I'd rather we didn't." she added.
"Well I would suggest you be extra careful with your waitress", Cortez
said as he struggled to stand up, having to use the arm rest on the
sofa to do it. "Give the Admiral my regards", he added with a smile
and began to step towards the door.
"Cortez"
She waited until he turned to look at her.
"This isn't a time to play games." she said when he did. "I'd like
your opinion."
Cortez turned around, his smile gone from his face. "No games
Commander. You already know what you should do. Kill her......Kill
the waitress now why you still have the chance", he said as he
turned towards the door once again. "Oh, and I meant what I said
about making your life a living hell", he added raising his right arm
as he stepped towards the door.
She stood up too. "You wont be back on the front line until I say so."
she said to his retreating back. "And you can get second hand
information to stew over in your little cubby hole of an office or you
can talk to me....your decision."
