=/-\= Aeran III, Late Afternoon =/-\=
Major Richard Cortez stepped off the small shuttle as it landed in the
dirt a few hundred feet from the rebuilt outpost on Aeran III. He was
immediately greeted by Marine Captain Remington and a civilian doctor
who introduced himself as Robert Beaumont.
"We've been expecting you", Remington spoke after exchanging greetings.
"Good", Cortez responded, "Then you know why I'm here", he asked.
"Yes", Beaumont spoke up, "but I'm afraid you wont find what your looking for".
"And what am I looking for Doctor?".
Remington shot a sideways glance at the doctor.
Beaumont stuttered, "La-look, besides a few normal cases of the flu,
there isn't anything out of the ordinary".
"Show me".
**Several Minutes Later, Inside the Temporary Hospital**
The hospital was quiet, except for Beaumonts continual reassurances
that everything was fine. The trio passed a few armed guards who
quickly let them pass and eventually came to the emergency room.
Remington broke the silence. "I've been trying to reach Unity for a
couple days now, the interference is still mucking up our
communications, on your way back could you relay my report for me", he
said as he stepped towards the door and pulled out a keycard.
"Yeah sure", Richard responded. "So what have you found out regarding
the missing medical team".
Remington shook his head, "I don't know for sure, but the locals seem
to think they got attacked by wild animals".
"Riiiight", Cortez rolled his eyes.
The door slid open.
"Right this way Major", Beaumont interrupted stepping forward and
beckoning them to follow.
"I'm sorry Major, but I have a few pressing matters to take care of at
the moment", Remington spoke up, "If you'll excuse me, perhaps we can
meet up later and discuss things in more detail".
Richard nodded, "No worries Captain, we'll meet up later", he added as
the marine walked away, then turned back towards Beaumont.
The room opened up to a row of seven patients, all laying on cots, all
barely conscious. "See, everything's fine", the doctor said motioning
to one of the few nurses in the room who began walking towards him.
"This is Nurse Wilkerson..."
Richard ignored the doctor and moved towards the nearest patient.
Noticing a small screen on a stand next to the cot he immediately
shifted his gaze to it. According to the readings the patient was
running a high fever and her heart rate was elevated. He looked back
down to the patient, a young girl no more than 20 years old, and
noticed she was shivering, and barely coherent.
"Typical symptoms of a fever Major", Beaumont said stepping to the
side of Cortez as he moved to each of the patients, one by one in the
line. All had similar symptoms and similar readings, except for the
last one, a child. As Cortez examined the boy he noticed feint dark
lines pulsating seemingly with his heart beat, on his face.
"Whats this", he said pointing towards his discovery.
"We think its an allergic reaction to the medicine that we've
administered", Beaumont quickly responded.
Not satisfied with the response, Richrd twisted around and took a deep
breath. "I want you to take the names of all who have had contact
with the infected", he said looking directly at the doctor.
Beaumont cringed, "I assure you that's not necessary Major, we have everyth-".
Cortez cut him off, "I'll be the one the decides what is and isn't
necessary Doctor", he paused shortly but was interrupted himself by
Captain Remington who suddenly burst in through the entrance.
"Oh there you are, Major, I thought you may have moved on already",
he said stepping forward.
Richard turned towards him and noticed he was now wearing a phaser at
his side. "Is everything alright".
"I've just heard back from one of my patrols, they think they've found
the missing medical team....or whats left of them", he stopped and
wrinkled his nose as he breathed in, "Was getting ready to head out to
see for myself and thought you might wanna tag along".
Richard nodded, "Yes I would", turning back towards the doctor, "We'll
continue this discussion when I get back".
