"Or is that the point, is this some sort of experiment, are you
playing God Rangi?". He threw the padd against the force field causing
small sparks to fly, "Or was this just Guzmans idea and you being the
loyal housewife just went along with it?", his accusations though
erratic had a point. He watched her reaction carefully.

As he threw the padd seemingly straight at her, Rangis instinctively
stepped back, her heaf turned away even though she knew the force
field kept her safe from harm. It fizzled with a second of brilliant
orange glow as she straightened up and met his piercing stare.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded. " No one has messed up.
We've got a situation that's getting out of hand because we don't know
what we're facing!" She took a step nearer the invisible divide. "Do
you 'always' have to bring this into it?" she asked, her tone grown
cold and quiet. "You can never resist belittling Shane Guzman can you?
At the least opportunity you accuse him of inefficiency or poor
judgement, now this time he's suddenly a God!." She glared at him,
barely concealing her growing anger, her lips compressed in a tight
line then looked away from him, closed her eyes for a few moments and
when she looked back at him she spoke evenly.

"I came to ask you to help me." she said " ...but all you can do is
suggest we are, somehow, for some inexplicable reason, setting lose
something that can infect the whole base.I'll leave you to wait for
your dinner." she ended and turned away.

"Get me out of here and I can help you", Cortez said as she turned.
"I'm not infected, and I know how you can prove it".

Rangi slowly looked back over her shoulder. "How?" she asked having
spent a few seconds trying to work out what he meant. If truth be
told, she didnt believe him but few things made sense and he appeared
not be joking or taunting her, so she retraced her steps and drew
closer to him. "You probably are infected." she said " In your report
you said the boy had grabbed you...it could happen that way."

"Maybe, but it didn't", he said looking at her. "I have a blood
sample from one of the infected after they've transformed, you can use
it to develop a cure, or at the very least use it as a way to test
people to see if they are infected, you're a doctor, you know more
than I do about this". he paused, "I'm sorry about what I said, I just
had to see your reaction, maybe your not in on it...", he voice
trailed off.

"In on what?" she asked, completely mystified as to what he alluded
but even as she spoke her eyes skimmed over his uniform and the bed on
which he had been seated. " Blood sample?" she said cautiously not
rising to any degree of hope. "Where is it and how did you get it?"

"I extracted it from the boy in my report", he paused as the scene
unfolded in his mind, "You should have seen it Rangi, he was
absolutely mad. He....It, this thing ripped its own arm from its
socket and felt no pain. Its what the infected are going to turn into
unless you can stop them", he took a breath. "I kept it hidden from
the guards, you'll find it in the pocket of my pants, it should still
be there. Check the locker in the cell block control room."

{It's too good to be true} was the first thought that sprang to her
mind. After all the research, all the false leads and frustrating
results,he had a phial of blood from an infected person?

"I read the report." she replied and shook her head. " You could be
infected...the situation you were in...." She shook her head again.
"Do you realize what you're saying? You're asking me to release
another infected person into a quarantined area?"

"You don't understand", Cortez replied, shaking his head, "Use the
blood sample to prove I'm not infected.", he let that sink in for a
second. "Now go, we don't have much time".

Rangi waited but a second longer then turned on her heel, hurried to
the door and tapped in the security code. She would see for herself if
the blood sample was really there. It was too much to hope for, she
told herself but she hoped for it just the same.

Richard watched as Rangi left and then went back to his spot on the
floor and leaned his head against the wall.
