"Bring it in over here!" Sharpe bellowed to the crane operator, as he stood in the middle of the collapsed ticket hall of the Transit station.
They were attempting to hoist a massive deuterium beam from off a large pile of rubble, which about five minutes ago, they'd picked up a weak life-sign from within the pile. It had been at that time when Richard had been walking through the hall to see what was going on, when one of the dust covered rescue workers had shouted out that he had a weak lifesign. He was working alongside everyone else, to try and dig through the rubble and debris to get to this single lifesign. There must've been about twenty people there, doing their part.
With both arms around the beam, he and several marines where heaving at the beam to lift it just enough to get the wire of the crane's hoist around the beam, so that they could lift it out. As the beam was gently pulled up, Richard began lifting up bits of broken concrete and pre-fab as they tried to get to whomever it was under all this.
"I've got a hole here!" Someone shouted, and Richard made his way around, to see where the hole was. The beam had lifted clear to reveal a small tunnel into what must be a lift shaft. He grabbed a tri-corder and a flashlight, and scanned the hole. The lifesign was about thirty feet below them.
"Hello!" Richard shouted down. "Can anyone here me?"
There was some noise and then a faint voice said; "Yes. Who's there?!"
"Starfleet Marine Corps." Richard replied, a grin on his face. "Don't worry, we'll soon have you out of there."
"Don't leave me... they've all left me..." Said the voice.
"We're marines, we don't leave people behind. Now you stay calm, we're coming to get you." Richard said. "What's your name?"
"Brian, I'm SFPD." He said.
Richard turned to the assembled rescuerers. "I need medics, who's a corpsman?" He asked.
"I am sir." Said a young blonde haired woman, stepping forward. Richard nodded to her. "Corporal Dukeman, sir."
"Well Corporal, you and I are going down that there hole, and we're going to get Brian out." Sharpe said, putting on combat webbing, and clicking a rope to his waist.
"Sir yes sir!" Dukeman said.
Richard approached the hole gingerly, and began wondering what probably everyone else was wondering; what the fuck was a general in his late fifties doing climbing down a hole which had little to no structural support? Well, it was too late to do anything about it now, as he began crawling down towards Brian.
Brian was pinned under debris at the bottom of what had been a stairwell that lead from the basement to the upper floors. He'd been thrown down the staircase by the inital explosion, and the subsequent collapse had pinned him down there. He'd survived with three others, a man, his wife and their daughter, but their voices had grown fainter as time had passed. He now felt alone, until he'd heard that voice from above. He could now see a torchlight heading his way, and it filled him with hope.
After what felt like ages, Richard made his way down to Brian, and smiled at him. "Hi there Brian." He said. "I'm Richard, and I'm going to help you out of here."
"Hi Richard." He said weakly.
"Lets have your sitrep." Richard asked, as Dukeman made her way down to him.
"I'm pinned beneath this slab of concrete." Brian said. "I can't feel my legs, my chest hurts something fierce, and breathing is very difficult. I'm having trouble staying awake."
Richard nodded. "Alright, well, we'll try and get this thing off you so we can get you out."
"There were three others in here with me." Brian said. "A young family, but they stopped talking some time ago."
Sharpe pulled out his tricorder and scanned for lifesigns, but besides Brian, he couldn't find any. He didn't want Brian to know that though. "Oh yeah, I can see them. They're about twenty five feet further down from here." He said. "We'll get you out first. Okay?"
"Sure thing. Just don't leave them down there. They've got a kid." Brian said, pleading.
"Don't worry son, we'll get to them." Richard said, as they applied a face mask to Brian.
