Andrus had already lost count the time he checked his gear. He was pretty nervous. Simulations where ok to train with but it was nothing like the real deal. it got pretty close but the most important thing was left out, you did not die in training.
He was wearing his combat fatigues, load bearing vest over protective gear. He had his rifle in hand, a sidearm to his thigh and a few extra clips. He had a combat tricorder on the front side of his vest and explosives in a small back pack.
His will was filled out, he had spoken to his parents not so long ago, he had said he loved them. Damn last time he spoke with them was when he was at the academy. Was it that long already? No, merely two days. He finally nodded to himself. He was ready. No loose ends.
Major Cortez finally decided to show up and they all stood at attention. Cadet Elbrum falling in last, a mere second behind. They where let off the attention and Cortez lay a hand on his shoulder, glaring at him. ''Ok. can't we go and come back already?'' Andrus said to himself. ''I hate paperwork.'' He heard the major say. That got a frown from andrus. ''What is he talking about? shit did I miss something?'' He mentally quarrelled with himself. ''I better start paying attention.'' Andrus looked to the other guy from the team, they nodded, so he did the same, even daring to lift a thumbs up to the major.
When the SSF team walked in. Andrus stood back, letting the two bosses dish it out. Was peace even an option for the near future? He was rather proud when his time consuming equipment check was mentioned. Knowing he had managed to get under the skin of professionals so easily, at least their Officer in charge, he wondered how easily they would break.
He did not know how to react when they did their radio checks. His team had done so, at the armoury before coming to the transporter room, so they could replace units if need be.
''Balls?'' Barnes told him. Andrus snapped to attention, jokingly. ''Check!'' He whispered tapping on his crotch, which made a hard noise.
''Is that a protective cup, Cadet?'' Barnes asked him, somewhat incredulous, barely holding a chuckle.
Jones walked to them. ''You don't need that. When they shoot at you, they usually don't miss, even less get at arms length.''
Andrus shrugged and nodded. ''I did not know, sorry.'' They patted him on the shoulder and chuckled together.
Cortez motioned for Elbrum, Barnes and Jones to step on the transporter pad. They all did and with the stomach in his throat, Andrus teleported to the USS eagle...
