Nym laid on the sofa and stared at the ceiling. {Good news
I don't think anyone noticed the help I gave the lieutenant
and according to the docs I only have a concussion. I only
have to lay here for a day and then back to work as usual.}
The two security guards assigned to guard in front of Nyx's
quarters snapped a salute and stood to attention when
realized who came to question the junior counselor.
At the sound of the chime Mnemosyme jumped as she was
startled from her thoughts and the soft noise seemed to echo
in the silence that surrounded her. She swung her feet to
the floor and stood in one smooth movement and regretted it
as her vision momentarily blurred and a queasiness signal
its presence in the pit of her stomach. She took a deep
breath and went to push the button beside the door. "What
could Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum possibly want," she said
softly to herself.
"Lieutenant Nyx, I am Admiral Guzman" Shane introduced
himself as soon as the door to Nyx's quarters opened. "I am
here to question you about the explosion event in front of
explosive carbo bay three"
{Is that my heart thundering ... deep breath.} "Of course,
Sir ... Come in." She remembered her last run in with the
man before her and knew her answers would be short.
Arriving in sickbay, Shane learned about the status of his
Chief of fleet security. Mumacik was lucky to be alive, nine
other security guys were not so lucky. When informed about
the romulan origin of two 'marines', Shane realized that
this was far more then an accident or a simple terrorist
attack. This was surely work of Romulan Intel … and to be
taken seriously. He would normally assign Mumacik to the
case, but since the guy was barely alive, he had none else
with enough trust to deal with the case. Doing the obvious,
he took charge of the investigation himself.
Asked to come inside, Shane (and his four body guards) came
inside Nyx's quarters. Nyx looked not very well herself, but
after the event it was not a big surprise. Shane seated
himself on a chair opposing the counselor and asked: "Let's
keep this simple and informal as possible. I'd like to hear
your story about the explosion. When did it happen, why were
you there and whet did you do … please"
Mnemosyme seated herself back on the furniture and ignored
the goon squad. "I was having trouble sleeping and went for
a jog. The corridors over by the cargo bay aren't very
busy.. especially at that time." She paused to think what
first alerted her that there was a problem. Giving her head
a shake; {poor manners} she stood suddenly. Her hand raised
to her temple and she slowly blew out a breath, "I'm sorry,
would you like a drink?"
Shane raised an eyebrow at the sudden change of topic. It
was a habit learned very long ago from a fellow Vulcan
tactical officer on SB Aurora. "No, thank you, Lieutenant"
Shane said, "nothing for me, but please serve yourself"
"And the party?" She made eye contact with everyone of the
guards now standing around her small great room.
None answered. Their job was to keep the Admiral alive and
unhurt and usually none of the cohort spoke to the Admiral a
word during the entire shift. Shane smiled and said: "I
think we are all fine, please continue, Lieutenant"
She was still in full view of everyone at the replicator
when she continued, "I heard a loud noise and then the floor
seemed to roll on me. I barely remained on my feet and then
I just instinctively went to see if I could be of some
help."
"Do you jog in that area regularly?" Shane asked, "anyone
who can confirm your statement?"
"It would be more accurate to say that I regularly jog and
occasionally in that area." Returning to her seat with a
glass of water. She sat crossed leg on the sofa, holding
her glass. "I don't know if anyone can confirm that fact. I
really try to avoid talking to others while I'm jogging."
It was not that Shane would think that Nyx would be a
traitor and worked together with the enemy. But after the
issue with Commander Utley, who was planting surveying
devices all along the station, there were very few, Shane
trusted. He watched the counselor carefully, trying to read
her heart. "Was there a single explosion or maybe two or
three?" he asked. "Did you hear any voices, conversation?"
Mnemosyme tapped her fingers along the side of her glass and
consider the Admiral's questions. {I was trained to take
things in ... what did I disregard as not important at the
time. Number of explosions? Passers by?} Someone clearing
their throat dragged her from her thoughts and another such
sound brought her fingers to a halt. Her eyesight seemed to
focus more sharply in the present as she met Shane's gaze.
"I only remember one explosion. And yes, I do remember some
voices but just barely and adjusted my course away from
them."
Shane went on with the questioning and asked: "Did you meet
anyone during your jog?" For some reason, Shane believed
that something was not all right with the counselor. Not
that she was lying or telling half truth, but she was on
alert for some reason.
"Yes, one or two people but I didn't pay much attention...
they were dressed much like.." She gestured to the guards
in the room around them. She rubbed her temples and was
glad to find that her head didn't seem to be aching as much.
{The cut there at the temple doesn't seems as tender
either... hhmmm...}
Shane nodded. It looked like that Nyx was just a accidental
part of the explosion and could provide only limited amount
of information.
"Unless you have any more questions, Sir, I hate to admit
I'm feeling a bit fatigued and perhaps I should get some
rest." She took a swig from her water glass and watched the
Admiral.
It was indeed the time to end the questioning and follow
other clues – while they were still hot, but there was
something … something that irritated the Admiral, but he
could not say what it was. The counselor really did not look
well, but somehow it looked like that the wound on her head
was somewhat smaller. Shane blinked and rubbed his eyes. "I
am sorry Lieutenant for troubling you that long" he said at
last. {Must be a trick of light or something} he said to
himself. Standing up from the chair, he added: "Until this
investigation is closed, please do not leave UNITY. If you
are in need to leave the station, contact my office for
prior clearance. If there will be anything you might
remember about, please contact me asap. Thank you for now
…"
"Yes, of course," she readily agreed as she stood and walked
the Admiral and his entourage to the door.
