====== Rangi & Shane's quarters, SB 234: UNITY
======

It was dark in the spacious quarters. Rangi was not here,
called by some medical emergency. Little Martin was in his
bed sleeping. Shane, clad in a bed dress himself was sitting
in a soft armchair, looking blank in the darkness.

He was thinking about his son and all the dangers that were
lurking on the little boy on this station. It was not that
easy to say that life in deep space was dangerous and that
thousands of other little boys and their parents lived
there. Martin was on board a Special Forces Task Force
Command Station, near to enemy borders in a time of war. SB
234 … UNTIY, was the ideal target for any massive Romulan
attack and that raised the danger level for anyone on board
considerably.

Shane feared that one day, his son could be injured … even
killed. A young and innocent life … terminated cause the
incompetence of adults to deal with their problems in
civilized manners. A victim of wicked politicians and
bloodthirsty military commanders and their evil plots and
games. It was not just an usual fear for someone's safety
… but it was a deep and freezing fear that bounded
Shane's arms and legs and filled his mind with doubt and
desperation. He felt that this fear was overwhelming him and
lessening his abilities to command.

When Rangi's and his own safety was concerned, Shane was
always sure that he would always put the interest of his
crew and ship forward, but he was no longer sure if a
Romulan assassin would hold a knife to his son's throath
and demand lowering UNITY's shields … that he could bear
to watch his son to die …

His dark thoughts were interrupted by a call from
Operations.

"Commodore, I am sorry to disturb you in this late hour,
but you ask to e notified when the Chimera will arrive. She
docked on platform C one minute ago"

+TAPS+ Thank you for informing me. Please contact Captain
Cropa Rojac and inform him about Chimera's arrival. I am
sure he can't wait to get on board his own ship again +

"I understand, sir" came the reply.

{Chimera – C} Shane thought, {the 4th ship bearing that
name in less then 10 years. One could think that serving on
board a Chimera means a short career} With some black
humour, Shane realized that there was just a single
Chimera's CO who did not loose his ship. It was Commander
Ohmsford, but maybe it was only thank to the short time he
was in command. Bretam lost the original Intrepid class
Chimera, Shane's lost the Katana class Chimera – A and
Rojac's lost the Chimera class Chimera – B. What faith
will meet Centaury class Chimera – C?
