Stephen Jacobs settled back in his chair fingers steepled in
front of him and looked towards the door. He expected the
chime to sound at any moment for the appointment was
scheduled for 10.00 and it was almost that time already. He
wasn't disappointed and called " Come in please." as the
sound of the chime died away.

Mnemosyme entered upon hearing the request after the chime.
She walked up to the desk and with no expression or even a
sense of focus in her eyes asked, "You wanted to see me,
Sir?"

"Of course," Stephen replied, not altering his position at
all. "Sit down won't you?" he added and waited for her to do
so., watching her all the time but with a not unfriendly
expression on his face. "Anyone new to my department needs
to meet her superior." he said " Does that surprise you?"

Mnemosyme took a seat. "No, and I'm not exactly new. You
didn't have room in your schedule for me 7 months ago, Sir,"
she answered in a matter-of-fact tone. She only stated
facts and shortly after she had arrived on the base all hell
had seem to break out. Her stare was steady and her manner
formal like one expects from a marine.

Stephen smiled. " I know how long you've been here." he said
and leaning back in his leather chair folded his hands, with
fingers interlinked, across his stomach, elbows resting on
the chair arms. " What progress have you made in settling in
here?" he asked.

"My progress has been satisfactory." With the exception
that she had no idea what her superior was going to ask, one
might have thought that she would have practiced the answers
over and over again to deliver them so emotionlessly.

"Is 'satisfactory' good enough for you?" Stephen asked.

"Satisfactory is the reality... it will do." Outstanding is
what she always strived for, but when working with other
satisfactory is usually what you ended up with. "It was
good of them to save some of your fish," she commented
letting Dr. Jacobs know that she had been to his office
before if for nothing else than to check in.

"They're very resilient species." he said, not looking
towards the tank." Satisfactory wouldn't do for them..its
survival of the fittest in their world...one could say they
strive for perfection."

"To strive and be rewarded with perfection are two different
things and if one can't adapt well then they often die."

"Define the difference," he said.

"Why.. can you not think of any differences for yourself?"

"You choose not to state any?" he countered.

"I don't choose to think for you," she stated.

"You do not answer the question," he said calmly then leaned
forward and pushed a padd across the desk between them.
"This is a new case for you. I expect an in depth appraisal
report on my desk by Thursday morning"

"Yes, sir." She left the padd where it sat waiting for her
dismissal. "And you can do something perfectly, but still
fail because of others."

"Then perfection wasn't achieved. " he answered. "That's
all." He met her eye with a level gaze which told her
absolutely nothing of what he was thinking, whether he had
been impressed or intrigued by her answers, whether he had
confidence in her or doubt.

She stood quickly and deftly removed the pad with her as she
went. The movement was smooth, quick and confident.

Stephen paid no attention to her as she walked towards the
door, nor yet when he heard it open and close behind her.
He was adding notes to a padd of his own, spending moments
of concentration filling in a report on Mnemosyme Nyx.
