It had now been about a week and a half since Gustav's accident with
an EM catapult and only slightly more than a week since he had his
cybernetic arm fitted, now he was away for a medical review from
Commander Summers to see if he was fit for duty.

He had amazed the nurses and doctors at the rehabilitation sessions
with his speedy recovery and his ability to control his new limb so
well in such a short space of time, Gustav wasn't smug about his
achievements but he figured it might be because as an engineer he
might have an affinity towards machines also he had slightly upgraded
the control interface to allow more control, this time drawing out
what he was doing to keep Mimi happy, this also made it slightly
easier as the interface was more complicated than he thought, not like
swapping out servos.

Rangi completed her notes and leaned back in her chair, stretching her
arms above her head to ease constricted muscles. She stifled a yawn,
relaxed and pulled forward the padd listing her appointments for the
morning session.

{Gustav Kroitzer} she read.

Gustav arrived at the sickbay and made his way to Rangi's office, when
he got to the door he pressed the chime button to let he know he was
there.

"Come in please" she called and looked up to see the deputy CEO enter
the room. She smiled to him as she invited him to take a seat and as
he sat down opposite to her asked, "So...how are you?"

"Good thanks… and you?" he replied hoping to be declared fit for duty
as soon as possible as he was bored, there is only so much tinkering
he could do to keep himself amused, Mimi also tried to keep him…
occupied but it still wasn't the same as being on duty.

"I'm well thank you." Rangi replied seeing through his light
heartedness. She looked down at the padd. "This is very encouraging."
she said "In fact you have made an excellent recovery from the
surgery." She raised her eyes to him and laying the padd
flat on her desk asked: "How are you really coping with the arm? I
don't want any exaggerations." she added in a slight warning tone
"...there must have been many difficulties for you. How have you
really found it?"

"I won't say there hasn't been any difficulties but in general I've
found it quite easy to use, the only slight thing is that I have to
concentrate sometimes on what I want the arm to do otherwise I'm…
clumsy" he replied to Rangi's question hoping that she would be
satisfied with the answer.

She nodded. "Well...it's early days isn't it?" she said, "You mustn't
expect too much too soon." They looked at each other. Rangi leaned
forward and rested her arms on her desk, linking her fingers together.
"I understand that you've been making... improvements..." she said
"...would you like to tell me what you've done?"

Always proud of his work he said, "I swapped out the micro servos with
high performance ones allowing more strength and micro control…" he
stopped to take a breath before continuing "…I've also upgraded the
control interface between the arm and my nervous system yet again to
add more control over the limb, it was my hope to, after some more
practice to have just as much fine motor control as I had with my
natural arm".

Rangi's expression showed her surprise." Really?" she asked. "I must
say I'm surprised...and I don't actually see how you have achieved so
much. Do you plan
anything else?"

"Well the only other thing that needs to be done is to maybe upgrade
the power supply to one with a higher capacity" Gustav said answering
her question.

"It goes without saying then that you'll be keen to get back to duty."
She unlocked her fingers and laid a hand on the padd. "The tests show
you certainly have achieved a great deal already and with that in mind
I'm willing to give you the all clear...on two provisos..." she added
quickly "I want you to attend counselling sessions because losing a
limb under any circumstances, despite how well you get on with a
prosthetic one, still has psychological leads and I also want you to
continue with the physio sessions... although you seem to have outdone
most of their testing already." She
flashed a smile to him.

With excitement in his voice at the prospect of getting back to duty,
Gustav started to get up from his chair while saying "Yes Ma'am".

"There is one other thing..." she said making him sit back on his
seat. " Lieutenant Jardan... in security... you know him? He too has
lost a limb though some time ago. It might be of interest to him and
to you if you discussed things."

"Ok Ma'am I'll see about getting in touch with him at some point" Gustav said.

"Good." Rangi replied and drawing the meeting to a close, "...then
I'll notify the Captain that you're fit for duty... but don't push
yourself too much ok?"

"I won't, and thank you" Gustav said before leaving sickbay.
