Rangi stood looking out at the portion of planet visible
through the large view port, idly wondering if it might be
possible for Shane, Martin and herself to spend a day or two
there, a sort of mini holiday where they could relax away
from the demands of duty and where the hours could be
relaxing and happy.
She would suggest it to Shane she decided as she turned to
the door where the chime had sounded.
"Come in" she called, walking back towards her desk and
looked towards
the figure who entered.
"Major Kinn, thankyou for coming so quickly. Please...take a
seat."
"Commander," Giella nodded as she entered the medical
advisor's office and took a seat. "What can I help you
with?"
"Communications." Rangi replied. "Ambassador Ayanami
informed
me that un encrypted messages have been intercepted in
Alliance space. Do you know anything about it?"
"Unencrypted messages?" Giella responded, frowning slightly.
"All SSF related communications are automatically encrypted
with a general SSF security algorithm which is updated and
altered frequently. I'm not sure what the ambassador meant
by that, but it's unlikely that unencrypted information
would be sent into Alliance space."
"Well, it seems as though it was." Rangi said."...unless you
think its been decrypted?"
"No, I don't think the Erassians would have the decryption
codes, and even if they did, admitting it would put the
Alliance in violation of the MDP. I doubt the ambassador
would do that," Giella said as she rubbed her chin. She sat
forward then in the chair and placed her elbows on the
table. "What exactly did these messages contain? And from
where to where were they sent? "
A slight frown appeared on Rangis face. " Mostly they
are...disparaging references to the medical capabilities of
the Alliance." Rangi said. "Its not something that I will
tolerate and I'll be having a word with Lieutenant Commander
Hiroshi. The messages are in here." she added and handed
Giella the padd Alecto had provided.
"Lieutenant Commander Hiroshi?" she questioned as she
looked over the padd.
"Yes...from the Nightingale...the medical ship in attendance
at Charos VI."
"It sounds to me like a case of making a mountain out of a
maja," Giella mused, then noticing Rangi's perplexed
expression replied, "A maja is a small seed where I come
from. I don't like to generalise, but Erassians can be a bit
touchy. The transmission may very well have just been a
disgruntled officer airing his opinion on a personal
channel, perhaps sent to the wrong address. In my opinion,
Ambassador Ayanami has more to worry about than a misguided
comment in Starfleet communique. She has Klingon blood on
her hands and her actions at Narendra may have soured future
relations with the Empire. We aren't innocent either; the
mission went badly and that's why the Klingon delegation is
being recalled from Unity. I'll still look into it, you can
never be too sure. There
have been reports that some of our communications systems
may be compromised, so I am not too surprised at the news."
" Thankyou, I'd appreciate it. " Rangi said then added: " I
was surprised by the Ambassadors appearance when she walked
in...she had Klingon blood on her clothes and was obviously
not in a good mood. It wasnt only the messages that she came
to complain about."
"What else did she have to say?" Giella asked. "If you don't
mind me asking," she added quickly, but the slight twinkle
in her eye made it clear she was very interested.
"No I dont mind." Rangi said giving a slight smile. " She
was concerned about the virus...its mutated..and wanted
help. That led to the mention of the messages and
then..well....lets just say that diplomacy didnt remain a
high
priority on either side. She's been trying to contact the
Commodore without success."
Giella sighed and leaned back in the chair. "There are
procedures to be followed. Yes, they are admittedly lengthy
at times, but they still have to be followed. If the
Alliance requires aid, they have to request it. We are not
an aid organisation but a defense institution busy fighting
a war; our resources are being fully deployed on our own
fronts and we don't have the time to ask them at every
incident if they require assistance. They have their own
infrastructure and capabilities and don't hesitate to remind
us of it when it suits them." Realising she was getting
digressing, Giella stopped herself and returned to the
point. "The conditions of the Mutual Defense Pact and the
conditions stipulating our supply of aid is simple; we are
not obligated to supply them medical assistance unless they
explicitly request it."
" They have now." Rangi said simply. " I'm going to talk to
the commodore about it."
"He has been rather busy of late," Giella replied. "I
suppose you can't blame her for becoming frustrated. Oh, I
wanted to ask... have you made any progress with your
investigation about the missing medication?"
Rangi shook her head. " No, unfortunately not." she
answered. " Every avenue has led to a dead end."
"There must be some explanation," the Intel officer frowned.
"In any case, I will looked into those messages for you and
let you know what the result is."
"Thankyou." Rangi said " I'll wait to hear from you."
