Premier Joseph Lephren approached the podium slowly and somberly.
He was dressed in a black suit and tie with a red poppy pinned to
the right lapel of his jacket. He stepped up to the podium and spoke
in his deep and commanding voice. "Today on the Earth Calendar is
the 11th of November 2408. Today is the 490th anniversary of
Armistace Day. On this day 490 years ago an end to the Great War
was announced. Back then it was hoped that never again would there
be a war that would engulf the world and cost so many lives. We the
human race have failed to live up to that dream as today we stand on
the very cusp of another war which threatens not just one world but
many, a war which if we lose we likely face annhialation rather than
occupation."
"Today though I do not stand here to represent the human race,
today I stand here as the representative for all the Humans,
Betazoids, Trill and Ferengi that make up the people of the
Erassian Alliance. You know as I know that for the past 140 years
we the Alliance have been attacked, harrassed and plotted against
by the Romulan Star Empire. I break to you now that this time they
have gone too far. The Starfleet Medical Ship USS McCoy and its
escort the USS Quasar-A were atacked by a force totalling 6 Romulan
Warbirds and 30 Heavy Fighters. The mission that was being carried
out by the USS McCoy was one to find a cure for the biological weapon
that was used on our planet of Charos VI. A biological weapon I am
assured by our top medical researchers which is likely of Romulan origin.
The attack on the USS McCoy was thwarted by the intervention of
4 Starfleet ships and our own Second Fleet."
"That was not the end of Romulan treachery today, in Federation space
today the Romulans sent a fleet of around 80 Warbirds to capture or
destroy the nearby Starbase 234. Naturally the Alliance will not tolerate
such blatent acts of aggression against ourselves or our neighbours.
The Second Fleet along with elements of the Third Fleet were dispatched
to aid the Starfleet's defence of the Starbase. Against these vastly
superior numbers our forces combined with those of Starfleet have
prevailed. This victory however has come at a great price 63 of our
service men and women have been reported as fallen. Their sacrifice
will not be in vain. Today by Special Act of the Erassain Alliance
Parliament we will make the same stand that our forebearers before us
have made. We will not tolerate aggression to ourselves or our
neighbours, we will not tolerate attacks on civillian targets and we
will not go quietly into the night. Today the Erassian Alliance issues a
call to arms as on this most solemn of days as we hereby issue a Formal
Declaration of War against the Romulan Star Empire."
"To our neighbours in the Federation and the Klingon Empire we urge
you to stand up and join us in battle. Whilst we have not always
gotten along, we have never been enemies. And to the Romulans
today you have woken the sleeping Shadow Wolf, sleep lightly for
you may wake up to find our teeth at your throats."
With that he stepped down from the podium and headed off to the
stage exit from the Press Room seemingly unperturbed by the clamouring
of the press corps, leaving the mass of questions to his poor Press Liason.
Only time would tell if todays actions had been the right ones and history
as always history would be written by the victorious.
