=Starbase 234=
For whatever reason, Commodore Guzman had put Rick in charge
of all repairs and other engineering efforts at the starbase and
throughout the Aeran system. Rick found this odd, considering that
the starbase already had a chief engineer.
When Rick arrived at the starbase, he started to understand Shane's
thought process. The place was a mess ... and that was putting it
mildly. And the funny thing is, most of it had nothing to do with the
Romulans. Nothing was where it should be. Well, almost nothing.
Engineering, for example, was a complete clusterf ... and Rick didn't
even want to get into the problems with rest of the station. The
moment he stepped foot on the base, he had to field dozens of
complaint calls.
'Where to start?' was what kept going through Rick's mind.
Thankfully he had engineers from numerous starships, including the
Chimera, to compliment those of the starbase. Rick was feeling a little
above his rank being in charge of so many people.
"Tobok, it would seem we have our work cut out for us," Rick said to
the Vulcan.
"We will prevail," Tobok responded.
"I'm glad to have you back. With you and Gustav and the officers and
crew from the Chimera, I feel like we can whip this place into shape,"
Rick said.
"What about me?"
Rick turned and faced a familiar face in the form of his former deputy
chief engineer.
"Didn't you lose your ship?" Rick asked of the CEO of the former
Manticore.
"I could say the same of you," Lieutenant Commander Kon Kordova
shot back. "If I'm not mistaken, this was the third ship you have lost as
chief engineer."
"Don't remind me," Rick said smiling, shaking Kon's hand. "It's good to
see that you survived the battle."
"You as well," Kon said.
"How about that deputy of yours. Blanchard was is?" Rick asked.
"She didn't make it," Kon said. "She was killed during the battle, before
we were forced to abandon ship."
"Oh ... I'm sorry to heat about that," Rick said.
"We all lost people," Kon said. "There is nothing that can be done to
change that."
Rick nodded, "We need to organize our efforts ... get this starbase and this
system ready. Kon, have all of the surviving CEO's and engineering staffs
to meet me here in 20 minutes. Tobok, I want a complete report put
together before the meeting takes place."
Both engineers nodded.
"What about Commander Utley?" Kon asked.
"Commander Utley?" Rick said.
"Lieutenant Commander Chloe Utley. She is Starbase 234's chief
engineering officer," Tobok said.
"Oh ..." Rick said as the two men stared at him. "Come on, guys. Give
me a break. I just got here. I can't remember every CEO in starfleet, now
can I?"
"I knew who Commander Utley was," Kon said as if it was a well known
fact.
"As did I?" Tobok added.
"Don't you two have something you should be doing now?" Rick
commented.
They nodded and went their separate ways. He could have sworn he saw a
grin on Tobok's face.
"Nah," Rick muttered.
Rick thought that now was probably a better time as any to speak to the
starbase CEO.
