=Shuttle Scioto=
Three shuttles departed one after another from shuttle bay one and made a turn toward the incoming Romulan fighters. Trent had given the Type-9 shuttle, the Amu Darya, to Shuite since he was the better pilot and could probably accomplish more. Trent piloted the Scioto and the other Type-7 shuttle, the Harricana, was being flown by Ensign Rok'shana. All three shuttles had a crewman manning the tactical station.
"OK, people, lets form up on the Amu Darya and try to drive a wedge into the Rommies. Mr Shuite, we're going to follow you in," Trent ordered form the Scioto's pilot's chair.
"Understood," Shuite said as they rapidly approached the Romulans in a V formation.
Then, all hell broke loose as the shuttles flew through the fighters, each side firing away at the other.
The shuttles got off a few good shots early, but were now being pursued by the more agile and well armed fighters. Two fighters went after the Darya while the other two shuttles were being chased by a fighter each.
The battle was actually going well for the shuttles until the Harricana lost her shields and was quickly destroyed.
"Damn it," Trent muttered as he made a sharp turn and made a close fly-by against the fighter that was chasing him, firing off a few micro-torpedoes in the process.
When the shuttles would try to take the battle away from the Lancelot, the fighters would turn and advance toward the starship. The shuttles now chased the fighters, but the fighters turned to again focus on the shuttles.
"Shields are down to 20 percent, the crewman manning the Scioto tac station told Trent.
"Transfer whatever you can to shields and weapons," Trent ordered.
About a minute passed and Trent's shuttle was being pummeled, but the Amu Darya managed to take out a fighter.
"Our shields can't take anymore, sir," the Scioto tac crewman said, before his station exploded, killing him.
Trent tried to maneuver the shuttle and fire her weapons, but it was becoming impossible.
+tap+ "Amu Darya to Scioto, we have four more Romulan fighters inbound."
Trent saw the new Romulan fighters close in and knew that they didn't stand a chance.
"Mr. Shuite, get out of here! I'll hold them off as long as I can!" Trent ordered.
Trent then saw a few more blips approaching on his sensors and just laughed.
"Seems the Rommies are overdoing it a bit," Trent muttered.
"Federation Shuttles this is Three Flight of Herakles' Strength Squadron inbound on your position. ETA 20 seconds." First Lieutenant Shaun Molyneux said over the open comms line.
"This is Commander Rodgers of the Lancelot. You are a sight for sore eyes, Lieutenant."
"Don't get grateful now it ain't over yet Commander. Three Flight weapons hot, we're going in."
The three Erassian M35's swept in and engaged the Romulan Scorpions in combat their primary plasma cannons dealing devastating damage to the Scorpion's shields in mere seconds before breaking formation to engage up close and personal in a dogfight.
Trent watched as the Erassians engage the Romulans. He pulled his own damaged shuttle out of the fight, but saw the Darya still engaging an enemy fighter. He then saw why. The Scorpion had broken away from the battle and was making for the Lancelot. The Scioto, being closer to the Lancelot, also went after the rogue Rommie fighter. The Scorpion seemed to pick up speed. Trent then realized what was happening.
The Scorpion made a direct line for the engineering section of the helpless Lancelot. It didn't even bother firing its weapons. It had no intention in doing so.
"It's going to ram her," Trent said to himself. "Not if I can help it."
Trent sat the course of the Scioto to intercept the Scorpion. The Darya tried to chase it down, but was losing ground. So, as far as Trent was concerned, he had only one choice as he picked up speed as well and planned to ram the Romulan fighter. The Scorpion tried to evade, but Trent kept it in his sights. Then, out of what seemed to be nowhere, a blast from one of the Lancelot's forward torpedo tubes slammed into the fighter, smashing it to bits. Trent barely avoided the blast, pulling back hard until he was well away from what was left of the Romulan fighter.
"Good work, Santos," Trent yelled out.
The Scioto then limped her way between the Lancelot and the Scorpions and M35's.
"Good work Fed you've got guts. If that ship can move we can escort you to the starbase. Plenty of shields and guns there to protect you. Fancy that then Commander?" Molyneux asked feeling oddly impressed by the determination the Federation pilot had shown.
Santos had pulled off one miracle by getting the torpedo tube operational. He didn't perceive another miracle in the way of the impulse drive, at least not right away. He also didn't like the idea of sitting around here, out in the open, knowing that more Scorpions, and maybe a warbird or two could come his way.
"Unfortunately, our impulse drive is still down," Trent said.
Before Molyneux could respond ...
+tap+ "Lancelot to Scioto."
"Scioto here."
+tap+ "Sir, we've got impulse back up, but only at just under 10 percent."
Trent smiled at the news. Santos might give his brother a run for his money.
"Excellent work. Set a course for the starbase. We'll get underway when I return to the ship. Rodgers out."
Trent then spoke to the Erassian pilot.
"Lieutenant, we might be a little slow, but if that offer still stands, we could sure use the escort."
Beneath his flight suit helmet Shaun grinned "No problem at all. Be sure to return the favour if we ever meet again in the future Commander." He signalled to the other fighters and they took up escort positions around the damaged Katana-B class and began the slow journey towards the relative safety of the Starbase.
