Rangi sat at her desk concentrating on the report she was
compiling. The door to her office was closed, so sounds from
outside were muted and the only indication of activity was
through the windows, left unfrosted, which showed that the
hustle and bustle of sickbay continued.

The report was, as usual, detailed and somewhat extensive.
Each injury had a treatment plan attached, for a copy of
this would reach the Medical Advisers office...which was in
fact her own on SB Unity...where it could be studied by
others.
Copies too would reach Captain Rojac and, eventually
Commodore Guzman, once it had been processed by his XO, Lt.
Colonel PontBrillant.
The medical terminology was also written in laymans terms
and it was on that precis which Rangi was now working.

Thirty eight crewman had needed attention in sickbay though
most were 'walking wounded' suffering only minor abrasions,
lacerations and sprains.
The most serious cases had come from Deck 10 and the
disaster in the environmental section.

Four men had been transported from there, two being dead on
arrival and one suffering horrific injuries which had, in
the end, claimed his life.
One survived although his prognosis was not encouraging. His
chances were slim and stood at only 15 %.

These were the first fatalities aboard the new Chimera and,
Rangi thought sadly, they would not be the last. Each ship
she had served on had grown a list of those dying in the
course of duty.
As XO and CMO, she had never been able to deal with it
lightly and hoped that she never would reach that state, for
each one was a dear son or daughter, someone loved and
cherished by another and none could be dismissed without
compassion.

In the present instance, one of the dead, Petty Officer
Terris, had been a brother of a junior nurse. It was her
first posting and his too.
Rangi was glad that she had relaxed some of the tightened
rules for it meant that the nurse had friends to support her
immediately afterwards and someone to talk to in the long
hours that would follow.

The section on Deck 10 had been sealed and once it had been
deemed safe to enter, an engineering team had set to work to
repair the damage, wearing EVA suits at the outset because
of noxious fumes.
In the mean time the secondary system was controling the
environmental settings and apart from an elevated
temperature in the junior crews quarters, two cells in the
Brig and holodeck 4, nothing else untoward had happened.

She stopped to reread her last few sentences but raised her
head and looked towards the door, calling:
" Come in" at the sudden two tone chime.
The door opened and Alexander Rices red haired figure took a
couple of steps inside. One look at his face told Rangi his
news would not be good.

"It's Specialist Marina." he said. " I've administered
Metrazine to treat the cardiac arrhythmia but I'd like you
to give your opinion please."

"Ofcourse." Rangi replied, getting to her feet immediately.

"Thankyou." Alexander replied and stood aside as she neared
the door before walking with her to the ICU.
