*** Rangis Quarters * USS Chimera-C ***
Rangi gasped some air, trying to calm her breathing and stop
trembleing.
Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a pale creature
looking back.
She raised her hand to her face and pushed back her hair
then, feeling more calm, ran some water into the basin and
splashed it on her face.
She patted her skin dry with a thick soft towel and
straightened up, feeling better now and more herself though
she waited a few more seconds to make sure the sickness had
passed.
Once certain that it had, she checked herself again in the
mirror, saw colour returning to her cheeks, folded the towel
and replaced on the rack then walked into the bedroom and
sat down gently on the edge of the unmade bed, releasing a
long breath as she did so.
This was the fourth morning in succession when she had been
physically sick and had spent a greater part of those days
feeling nauseous from time to time.
On the preceding evening, she'd returned to her quarters
feeling rather light headed and thinking that she needed
something substantial to eat, had replicated a meal only to
be overcome by a wave of nausea at the sight of it.
She'd gone to bed soon afterwards and had, thankfully, slept
throughout the night, only to wake in the morning feeling as
off colour as she had the day before.
After a few moments, she got to her feet and made her way
into the main room and to the small desk set in a corner by
a view port. She sat down and opened a channel to Scott
Fisher He didnt reply immediately and when he did, it was
obvious that he was still half asleep.
"Fisher..." he said in a slightly croaky voice.
"Scott...its me..Rangi. I'm sorry to disturb you but I
wondered if we could meet in sickbay later. I need
medication."
Scott had worked a night shift and had only been asleep for
just under two hours but propped himself up on his elbow
frowning at her last words.
It was a rule that noone self medicated no matter what their
position on the ship and he knew that if Rangi thought she
needed something stronger than an ordinary painkiller for a
headache, then she must be feeling quite poorly.
"Are you ok?" he asked with concern.
"Yes...its..its nothing much..I'd just appreciate it if you
could.."
"Ofcourse." he said, sitting up now. " You looked a little
pale yesterday..I thought it was just tiredness...have you
been sleeping well?"
Rangi closed her eyes, not wanting to have a history taken
over a comm link. " Yes.. its nothing much. I just feel a
bit off colour." she said.
"I'll meet you there...give me...er...thirty minutes?" he
replied, swinging his legs out of bed and looking around for
his clothes.
" Dont rush." she told him. " Anytime this morning will be
good."
There was a pause. " I'll meet you there in thirty minutes."
he said with a tone of finality.
" Thank you Scott."
The call ended and Rangi sighed.
It was a nuisance to have to get another doctor to dispence
medication but rules were there for a reason and she wouldnt
break them.
The stars streamed past outside and after observing them for
a half minute or so, Rangi decided breakfast might be a good
idea and thought that a slice of toast might be just the
thing.
*** AMO office * Sickbay ***
"Ok...so whats been happening?" Scott asked perching on the
end of his desk and looking down at Rangi seated on a chair
in front of him.
" I havent felt well for about a week." she said.
" A week?" Scott sounded and looked surprised.
" Yes...about that...perhaps a little more. At first I felt
a bit tired, a bit edgey...then nauseous sometimes. I
thought I'd eaten something that disagreed with me."
Scott nodded but said nothing.
"I havent had much of an appetite but its getting worse and
not better..and I've vomited a few times."
"Have you had breakfast?" he asked.
"Yes..some toast."
"What about yesterday?"
"Some..toast."
"Toast?..is that all?"
"Yes...I just didnt feel like eating anything else. I made a
meal in the evening but couldnt face it."
"Ok...so you've been feeling worse in the evenings?"
She looked up at him. " And in the mornings too."
He held her gaze for a few seconds.
" Right" he said carefully." I have to ask you...is there a
chance that you could be..."
"Pregnant?" she filled in the word." Yes...yes there is a
possiblity."
"Right." he said again, more slowly this time but then
pushing himself off the desk said briskly " OK..well we'll
include that in the examination then shall we?"
She got to her feet. " We can rule it out." she agreed and
followed him from the office into an examination room.
Ten minutes later she lay on a biobed staring up at the
ceiling, hands crossed over her stomach. She turned her head
to the right and looked in Scotts direction. He was busy
getting test results and had his back to her.
{I wonder if it is.} she thought { There's a chance...a
'slim' one...but a chance I suppose.}
A few seconds ticked by and she wished Scott would hurry up.
{ A baby..} she thought dubiously and bit her lower lip. { A
'baby'......our baby..}
She looked back at the ceiling.
{ It's what I've always wanted ..just not.. quite...yet..}
She glanced at Scotts back then towards the door then to the
medtray close by.
{ Shane would be..pleased. yes..yes he would be. He'd be
happy about it ...after the initial shock!}
"Wont be a minute." Scott said half turning to her with a
reassuring smile. She smiled back politely and he turned
away.
{ A baby...a little boy of our own...or a little girl...it
would be wonderful.} She gave the minutest nod and smiled to
herself.{ Ok...so its not ideal..its going to take a bit of
getting used to..but if its meant to be then..well...we're
going to be parents of our own baby........ I'm going to be
a mother!...I'm going to fat!!}
The more she thought of it, the better it became and the
uncertainty disappeared as her thoughts grew more and more
positive. It took little to convince herself that once they
both got used to the idea, then it would be a wonderful
thing for both herself, Shane and little Martin.
So it was that when Scott turned and walked back to her, he
saw hope in her eyes when she looked at him. She sat up and
there was eagerness in her voice when she asked:
" You have the result?...what is it?"
