( The more she thought of it, the better it became and the
uncertainty disappeared as her thoughts grew more and more
positive. It took little to convince herself that once they
both got used to the idea, then it would be a wonderful
thing for both herself, Shane and little Martin. So it was
that when Scott turned and walked back to her, he saw hope
in her eyes when she looked at him. She sat up and there was
eagerness in her voice when she asked: " You have the
result?...what is it?" )
Scott was surprised, for her earlier comment of 'we can rule
it out' was certainly at odds with the tone of her voice now
and also with the expression he saw in her bluegrey eyes, so
he paused a moment before he replied.
"It's negative." he said in an even tone and saw a light die
in her eyes.
"Oh" was all she said and he knew that she wanted a
different answer.
She leaned against the edge of the biobed and reached down
to slip on her shoes.
{ Negative... oh... well...its probably for the best...it
wouldnt have been such a good thing...not really...not now}
she told herself { ..not with the threat hanging over
us....} and the positive outlook she had convinced herself
with only a few moments before was crushed away.
She dragged her thoughts back to concentrate on what Scott
was saying about anti sickness medication.
"...so a short course of Dexsetrin...you shouldnt experience
any side effects from that..." he looked at her with
encouragement "..and in the mean time try to eat proper
meals...toast is 'not' a meal!"
She smiled thinly.
" Try something light..." he said "..little and
often...dont overload your system ok?"
She nodded. " Ok...I'll eat more than toast and not
overload."
"Good." he said as though he was dispensing great wisdom and
teaching her something she didnt know. He smiled to her and
laid a hand on her shoulder. " You need to rest too..take
things easy for a bit."
"Can't do that I'm afraid." she said briskly " ...Captain
coming to visit...and I have the transporter system to check
out this morning."
Her expression told him there was no reply to be made. " You
on the other hand need to get back to bed." she said then
added with more seriousness;
"Scott... I do appreciate you coming down here....I didnt
want to ask anyone else."
He looked down at her and patted her shoulder understanding
the reason why.
Rumours spead fast and he could imagine how soon the
Commodore would have been told he was going to be the father
of triplets.
"It's what friends are for." he answered softly then turned
away. " Right...lets get the medication for you."
He disappeared into the dispensary and returned a short
time later holding a small bottle of pale pink pills which
he handed to her. "One three times a day before meals" he
said.
"Thankyou." She took the bottle and looked at it.
" A pleasure." he said and they exchanged a smile glad that
things were sorted out.

Scott returned to his quarters to finish his interrupted
sleep but kept recalling the look in her eyes when he had
said 'Negative'.
It puzzled him, for surely she couldnt want a pregnancy with
the situation as it was. In the end he put it down to a
latent mother instinct and drifted off to sleep.

Rangi spent the morning with the transporter chief testing
and retesting the transporter system in finest detail.
By early lunchtime she was feeling hungry but not wanting
to risk having to leave the mess hall in a hurry, elected to
return to her quarters and replicated some chicken soup.
She sat down at the table with the bowl in front of her and
eyed it with a little trepidation as she swallowed one of
the pale pink pills.
She lifted the soup spoon and gingerly took a sip of the
broth. It tasted good and she sipped a little more,
eventually enjoying all of it.
She half expected the now familiar wave of nausea to follow
it but nothing happened and she returned to her office not
thinking about babies very much at all but feeling glad that
the problem was so easily solved.
