Rick looked around at the skeletal crew finish up preparations
for the Detector to get underway. The ship was capable of
making the short trip to Unity, but after that, she would need
extensive work to not only finish construction, but to make
minor upgrades. Most of the ship's systems were several
decades old.
"Commander Rodgers, we're receiving a communication from
Commander Ohmsford. He says they are ready to get under
way," the crewman manning the ops station.
Rick was about to answer, but then made a realization. He
looked around the bridge and saw the highest ranking officer
other than him.
"Lieutenant," Rick said. "You in command. You make the call."
Lieutenant (j.g.) Waylon Grogh looked up from the tactical
station with a puzzled expression.
"But sir, you outrank me. I thought ..."
Rick sighed. Everyone had just assumed that Rick was in
charge. He even allowed himself to believe so. But he knew
that was not possible.
"Lieutenant, in accordance with recent starfleet decisions, I
unable to lead department, let alone take command. You in
command until we return to Unity."
"Sir?"
"Understand?"
"Aye, sir," Grogh replied, moving from tactical to the
captain's chair. "Ops. Inform Commander Ohmsford we are
ready to go."
"Aye, sir."
"I be in engineering," Rick reluctantly said in a low tone
before exiting the bridge. He was no longer necessary on the
bridge and would be more useful working on the engines.
