[Ready Room – Deck One – USS Chimera NCC 96899-C]
[Begin Log]
[Capt Rojac] Captain's Log stardate 240902.24.
The Chimera is in transit back to Starbase UNITY in the Aeran system following our investigation into the Romulan infiltration of Outpost 0071 of the cloaked sensor outpost network along the Federation-Romulan border. The mission was a melancholic success.
The crew and ship performed well in the execution of the operation, however we were not able to save the outpost or maintain the integrity of the network. I fear that knowledge of our border system is now in Romulan hands.
UNITY forwarded us the mission parameters close to the completion of our shakedown trials, and I quickly set course for the operating area around the outpost. The Engineering and Operations departments coordinated on developing a transporter program to execute the precise timings required to transport through the Outpost's cloak and shield defenses. Before we ran through with the plan, however, I ordered Marine Captain Xerxes to send in the Shadow wing for a recon operation. Her fighters found a couple of cloaked warbirds in close range of the outpost, and she predicted that more would not be far away.
On the cloaked transport run, the transporter program went by flawlessly, and Master Chief Johnson and his teams were beamed aboard without error. The transport was quickly picked up by the warbirds present and a battle ensued.
The warbirds were of a new class that I am unfamiliar with. They were of a frigate design with more ornate, heavily plated 'wing' structures guarding the warp conduits fueling the nacelles and the twin tandem impulse drives. These 'birds were quite maneuverable in close-quarters combat, but my Tactical Officer's analysis says they should suffer at top end speeds.
It appears that the Romulans have developed a new, more powerful class of disruptor as well. Although my science and tactical teams have yet to compile the full report and analysis of their effect on Federation hull compositions, it can be safely said that they are indeed more effective than previous incarnations. It is yet to be determined how effective carbonite deflector programs would be in defense to these new disruptors as well.
The newly minted century class Chimera, and her experimental weapons systems performed admirably. Despite the new and more powerful Romulan disruptors, the Chimera's deflector shield matrix handled them with ease. Our point-defense phaser programs though seemed to be lacking in processing time and quickness of target acquisition in the presence of multiple targets. Luckily, Xerxes' lancer squadrons filled in the gaps. I will petition my Operations, Engineering and Tactical Departments to find a remedy to this problem. If we need to build a designated computer core for the program, then so be it. We are still breaking in the fourth incarnation of the Chimera, but I have a feeling this one will be with us for quite a while.
As for the mission, I feel that I must recommend a complete redeployment of the sensor network. With the infiltration of Outpost 0071, I feel the entire integrity of the Outpost Network is threatened. I recommend a complete redistribution of outpost monitoring positions along the border making use of their on-board thrusters, and a increased patrol routes along the neutral zone.
I turned over command of the sector to Captain Moira Henry of the USS D'Artagan when the Taskforce starships Eagle and Explorer arrived to take the Chimera's place. We should arrive at UNITY within the hour for a two week period of rest and relaxation before resuming patrol duties along the border.
I hear that Starfleet Command is dispatching Admiral LeGrand and his fleet to our lines. I am looking forward to this deployment. This would allow SSF ships and crews to perform actions they were trained to do. Special Forces are not meant for conventional warfare, but for special operations. We specialize in covert insertions, reconnaissance, guerilla tactics, and campaigns behind enemy lines. With LeGrand's presence, his ships can take on the more menial patrol duties while we can execute the operations Special Forces personnel are best at.
Let's just hope that-
[Sound of com-badge chirrup]
[Capt Rojac] Rojac, here.
[LtJG Montesque] Captain, we are just receiving word that there has been a large explosion on Starbase UNITY.
[Capt Rojac] Is it Romulan?
[LtJG Montesque] Unknown at this time sir. There are no hostile ships reported in the area, but the investigation is on-going. The Hindenburg has deployed all her fighters to patrol the perimeter of the system, but so far they've found nothing.
[Capt Rojac] Thank you, Lieutenant. Rojac out. Computer, end log.
