Cortez sat at his desk, brooding almost, he was tired bored and really
not in the mood for any shit from anyone. The security staff on board
had run their training programs and he'd been evaluating them on their
actions, as of yet he hadn't participated in anything more than
co-ordinating between his Deputy and the rest. Deciding on a surprise
inspection he stepped outside his office and moved towards the armory.
The clerk immediately jumped to attention as Cortez stepped into
view.
"Have the weapons arrived yet", the Major asked. For some reason the
entire contents of the ships armory had been offloaded onto the
starbase when it had arrived. Something about long overdue
repairs/upgrades.
The clerk responded quickly. "No, sir, I am actually working on that
now, it seems that the Stations Security Chief is holding them up,
he's saying we don't have the proper clearance".
Cortez shook his head. "Carry on", he added and turned to leave. The
ship was due to leave soon and not having a fully stocked armory would
be a very bad thing indeed. He would have to deal with this himself.
It didn't take him long to find his way to the Station CSEC's office
and trying to be nice he patiently waited for the yeoman to announce
his presence and let him into the room.
The number of security issues rose sky high in the last week and
UNITY's security was busy like never before. Not everyone liked the
sudden increase of work, but since the Chief was assigned by Admiral
Guzman himself, there were not many places one could hand a complaint.
Cortez was shown immediately into a large office, which looked very
tidy despite the large number of PADDs there. It made the impression
that each PADD contained a security case that has not been yet
*properly* finished – and it was the truth. From attempt murder down
to fork (cutlery) stealing, all open cases were concentrated in this
office.
Richard entered and was amazed at how clean the place was. No matter
how much he tried he wasn't sure he could ever replicate the same
level of tidiness in his own office, especially with the workload of
being a security chief. He took a few steps into the room and
immediately noticed the man behind the desk.
Mumacik nodded, stood up from his chair and walked over to Cortez
saying: "Good day, Major Cortez. I am Lieutenant Mumacik, Chief of
fleet level security. How can I be of assistance?"
"Well I seem to have a problem", Cortez began, "The USS Chimera's
armory is empty, and I'm being told that you are the reason". He let
a small smirk edge to his lip.
Turning around, Mumacik made two steps and reached for a certain
(among all those 94) PADD and took it. Turning back to Cortez he said:
"You are correct, Major Cortez. We have 15 crates labeled as personal
weaponry, assigned for USS Chimera in our security cargo bay. Because
of the advanced level of that weaponry, only the Chief of Security
from USS Chimera in person can sign the delivery. I have a Marine
Captain Channer Davis listed here as the recipient.
"Davis is no longer Chief of Security, I am", Cortez responded hoping
this would be a simple fix. "I will sign for the delivery".
Mumacik shook his head: "Unfortunately, there is no such change
recorded in the roster of USS Chimera." he said. Skimming through the
PADD he added: "I have a Major Richard Cortez listed on the transfer
roster for USS Chimera, but no record that he has assumed his position
yet." He looked up at Cortez again and said: "Therefore it's still
Marine Captain Channer Davis only who can sign the delivery"
Cortez grew annoyed. "Well then your records are wrong, change them,"
He said bluntly.
"The standard procedure is" Mumacik said in his usual machine like
tone, "to identify yourself to the main computer of vessel or
installation you are assigned to and declare yourself assuming the
position. In some cases the agreement of CO or XO is required to
complete the procedure. Only then you are officially part of the
requested crew and holding the requested position. Did you do so,
Major Richard Cortez?"
Richard rolled his eyes. Being talked down too by this guy was not
helping his mood. "Listen Lieutenant", Cortez said looking at his
rank, "All the proper procedures were completed; it's simply your
records that you have failed to update. I suggest you contact your
superior officer or whomever it is that you need to talk to so that
this can be resolved".
Mumacik nodded: "Your request is noted, Major Cortez. I will contact
Captain Rodgers shortly"
"Well if that's how its going to be", Cortez nodded. "I'll be back
for my weapons soon". He then turned and left just as quickly as he
had entered.
Like nothing happened, Mumacik turned back and walked to his desk.
There was a lot of other work and once he will contact UNITY's XO, the
case was closed for him – until a superior officer will order to
release the weapons or Major Cortez will present the required
authorization by becoming (officially) Chimera's CSEC.
