The tail end of the journey to Starbase Unity had been completely uneventful; in fact, Second Lieutenant Dick Winters would have called it boring, had he actually been asked. However that time had been appriciated, as it allowed him time to review the files on the station and it's crew. So when they arrived, the Lieutenant knew exactly who to report to.
With his belongings being taken to his officer's billet on the station, Dick was allowed to report to General Sharpe without any baggage. And so he had made his way throught he corridors, and taken a turbolift to the outlet nearest the General's offices.
He entered the reception area and nodded at the woman sitting behind the desk. "Lieutenant Winters to see General Sharpe," he said, standing at ease. "He should be expecting me."
“He is indeed.” Came the pleasant voice of Richard’s aide. “Go right in.”
"Thank you," replied Winters, again offering a quick nod in thanks before moving to enter the office. The doors parted as he approached them and the Lieutenant walked through the portal, stopping about three paces from the General's desk.
Standing at stock-still attention, the young man called out, "Sir, Second Lieutenant Richard D. Winters, reporting as ordered, sir!"
Sharpe cringed when he was shouted at in a deafening manor. “Geez… I can tell you’re just out of
The young man went into the relaxed stance of 'at ease,' with his hands clasped at the small of his back and nodded, "Thank you, sir."
“So, you’re one of my new officers that command sent me to bolster my ranks?” He asked, casually. “You lot always seem so young.”
"Sir, yes, sir," Winters said with yet another nod, unsure how to take the General's statement. He added, "And that comes with the territory, sir. They recruit us young, sir. Just more time for us to make the Corps proud, sir."
“Well, I was much younger than you when I enlisted.” He smirked. “Have a seat, Winters.”
The young man hesitated for only a moment before he gave in and sat down in a seat across from Sharpe, though his stature was still tense, "Thank you, sir."
“What’d you specialize in, at
"Beyond the standard training, sir, I also studied battlefield medicine and advanced infantry tactics," Dick stated matter-of-factly. "As well I received multiple marksman notations during firearms training."
“Hmmm…” Richard carried on reading. “I see here that you took the extra year’s airborne training. Enjoy that?”
The Lieutenant took a moment before responding, "It was a thrill, sir." In fact the only reason he had taken on the extra training was to say that he had trained along side the best there was; that he actually enjoyed it had been a surprising secondary consequence.
“Well, as it so happens, I have a battalion of airborne marines. How would you like to serve there, instead of a regular line unit?”
"I..." began Winters, a hint of excitement escaping for just a moment before he recovered. "I would find that very agreeable, sir."
“Good.” Richard said, tapping something into a PADD. “I’m assigning you to Easy Company, 2nd Battalion. You’re to report to Captain Spiers, on deck 312.”
Jumping from his seat the Lieutenant snapped back into attention, "Sir, yes, sir."
Richard handed Winters the PADD. “Make sure you’re ready, Winters. We’re moving out in fourty-eight hours. You and the rest of the second battalion are coming with me to Passada.”
Throwing up a crisp salute, Dick responded, "I'll be ready, sir. You can count on me."
“Dismiss.” Richard said.
The Lieutenant lowered the salute, executed an about-face, and marched from the General's office. His next stop would be deck 312, home of Easy Company. Perhaps after that he would get to see where he would be living from now on.
