Anya took a draw off her cigarette.  Normally she wouldn't have
needed one but today she had two big reasons why she had to
indulge.  First up and most personally irritating to herself was the
performance of her AX-02 Lancers and the Z-105 Shadows against
the Romulan Warbirds.  Whilst the outcome of the scenario was
victory this time in larger engagements her fighter unit would
suffer casualties.  The problem itself hadn't come from the
performance of the Lancers or Shadows themselves, the fighters
performances were bang on the initial estimates.

The problem arose with the armaments that were on offer were
just plain poor.  Starfleet unlike the Erassian Alliance Military had
only really looked to the tactical advantages of fighters during the
First Dominion War whereas the Alliance had incorporated fighters
into their military structure since the formation of the Alliance
over 140 years ago.

Anya cursed at the poor provisions on offer wishing that she
had previously had time to look at the development of new
fighter weapons as she had initially planned.  However due to
the insanely short time she had to finalise and build prototypes
of the AX-02 Lancer she had no opportunity to look into weapons
development.

The issue was that the missiles on offer were suitable for hitting
fighters and light bombers they just didn't pack enough punch to
hurt a capital ship in anything other than large quantities.
Torpedoes on the other hand packed a huge punch but were easy
to avoid when dropped and therefore had a tendency to miss.
Whilst the torpedoes would be ideal for attacking a space station
or a ground base they just weren't suitable for use against capital
ships.  What was needed was a middle ground that would combine
the maneuverability of the missiles with the power of a torpedo.
What she needed was an ASM…an Anti Ship Missile.

She sent the order to suspend all research into the two current
projects in her development lab.  The Anti Ship Missile would have
to take precedence over the Bunker Busters and the Stand Off
Dispensers.  Luckily though it didn't look likely that the Federation
was going to be fighting any major ground battles soon so the
Close Air Support could be placed on the backburner for now.
Anya sighed and sent off copies of the development report to
the CO, Starfleet R&D and annoyingly enough Commander Lernen
Harbright the Intelligence Advisor.  This allowed Anya to move
onto the second problem…the new Romulan Assault Fighter.
