T'Vel was sitting in the office of the Chief Medical Officer making notes about medical files and sifting through things that still had to be done. Commander Summers was on her way back to the base and T'Vel wanted to have everything in top shape when she returned so that she could easily take over. She imagined that it must have been a surprise to the Commander to receive her request for leave, but T'Vel felt it could be put off no longer.
She had not returned to Vulcan since the death of her husband and her children have been away from their ancestral homeworld for too long. With Summers' team returning and things stabilising for the medical team, T'Vel decided she should seize the opportunity before she was not desperately needed at Unity. The USS McCoy was also scheduled to dock at Unity within the next month which would bolster medical reinforcements in case of an emergency.
The sound of a chime drew T'Vel's attention and she looked up through the glass panes to see one of the young nurses, Petty Officer Luinda, waiting to enter.
"Enter," T'Vel said and turned her chair towards the Trill nurse. "How may I help you?"
"I came to bring you the stock update for Pharmacology Storage 4, doctor," she said, sitting down and looking slightly nervous. "But there's a slight problem."
"A problem?" T'Vel asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, doctor," Luinda said, her spots very pale. "We've noticed a large store of diophyletine is... missing."
"Missing?" T'Vel arched her eyebrow higher.
"Yes, ma'am," Luinda nodded. "Two containers, each with 6 vials, are missing. Well, not entirely missing, just... empty. The vials inside were empty."
"Is it possible the stock has been misplaced and the containers erroneously labelled?" T'Vel asked.
"It could be, ma'am, but that would be a pretty obvious mistake to make," Luinda objected. "And several months ago I checked the stock and the containers were full."
"Never underestimate incompetence," T'Vel replied, thinking for a moment. "But it is perhaps rather unlikely that it would have been misplaced. How many patients have been administered diophyletine since we received the stock?"
"None, I've checked thoroughly," she replied. "Really, I've checked thoroughly and there's no record of any patient requiring diophyletine."
"Not many patients require diophyletine," T'Vel said, musing aloud. "It stabilises biomimetic functions. There's no record either of any officer specifically requesting diophyletine?"
"None, ma'am," Luinda shook her head.
"A mystery," T'Vel said. "Thank you, Nurse Luinda. You may return to your duties. I will investigate the matter further."
